Sony Interactive Entertainment, the firm that owns PlayStation, may wish to deploy NFTs and blockchain technology on its platform, according to information in a patent that it has submitted. The patent is titled “Tracking Unique In-Game Digital Assets Using Tokens on a Distributed Ledger,” according to Video Games Chronicle.

A method for using blockchain technology to record the past of a special in-game object is described in the patent. This would include details about who created the item, who owned it, and whether it had undergone any modifications.
Sony links digital assets to sports collectibles in the background section, noting that “people frequently find it meaningful to own or use distinctive physical artifacts associated to respected celebrities or activities.”

According to the patent, gamers may want to acquire in-game objects created by or owned by well-known esports players or gaming influencers. The patent also states that tracked data may reveal if an item is owned by a player. Example: Used to win a significant gaming competition. Games and even cross-platform item transfer are included under the patent.

“By recording the history of digital assets and the systems that create and manage such digital assets, the approaches and technologies disclosed herein enhance the functionality of digital assets connected with video games.”

Sony’s gaming business hasn’t made many comments about NFTs in games so far. A representative for the company claimed that the digital collectibles program PlayStation Stars “is not going to make any sense” when it was first announced earlier this year. wasn’t employing NFTs or blockchain technology, either.

Some of Sony’s other divisions have already released their own NFTs, such as a campaign that provided Spider-Man NFTs to supporters who purchased tickets for Spider-Man: No Way Home, even though SIE hasn’t publicly commented on the patent.
