Metamask’s New Data Collection Policy under scrutiny of users
Metamask said it has revised its T&Cs to make its position on user data clear in a somewhat blasé tweet. In essence, it was making public the fact that it will start monitoring the personal data of its 21 million active wallets. The disclaimer at the conclusion that it would “do nothing” with the user data was unconvincing.
Metamask has faced a barrage of criticism from the larger Web3 community in the wake of the announcement. Many consider it to be an unpleasant departure from the industry’s autonomous structure. Others have remarked that even if Metamask decides not to use the data, it is still available for potential future exploitation.
However, more information indicates that the data gathering will only take place utilizing the standard Infura Remote Procedure Call (RPC). By using a private or third-party RPC, users can avoid this upgrade. Alternately, individuals can start using a separate wallet entirely in order to maintain their anonymity.
