Sotheby’s recently concluded its first-ever Bitcoin Ordinals online auction, featuring four collections from the Ordinals Maxi Biz (OMB) series. Renowned in the digital art market, the OMB series frequently ranks among the top five in market caps for Bitcoin NFTs, boasting a market cap of approximately $53.4 million. The auctioned artworks included pieces by Tony Tafuro and Berkin Bags, among others, and garnered substantial global interest from collectors, fetching a total sum of $730,800.
Bids were welcomed in both USD and BTC, merging traditional art sales with modern digital transactions. The highlight of the auction was the Red, Blue, Green, and Orange Eye OMB Set, fetching $441,000, just shy of its hefty estimate. Other pieces, like ‘The Artist’s Journal’ and ‘This is Me’ by Tony Tafuro, sold for $75,600 and $126,000, respectively, slightly below their projected prices. Berkin Bags’ ‘Recording in Progress’ sold for $88,200, also falling short of its anticipated range.
Despite not meeting their ambitious price goals, each piece drew significant global attention and generous sums, highlighting the continued allure of crypto art in traditional auction spaces as fundamental Bitcoin-centric milestones approach.
