Real life: HONG KONG POLICE introduce CYBERDEFENDER

In a bid to promote cybersecurity in the era of Web3 and the metaverse, the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau (CSTCB) of the Hong Kong Police Force has launched a cutting-edge metaverse platform called CyberDefender. This innovative endeavor aims to raise public awareness about the potential risks associated with the metaverse and empower individuals to protect themselves against technology-related crimes.

Introducing CyberDefender
During an engaging online event named “Exploring the Metaverse,” CyberDefender was officially introduced across three virtual venues. These virtual spaces fostered insightful discussions on strategies to prevent crime within the metaverse. Chief Inspector Mr. Ip Cheuk-yu emphasized the importance of exercising caution in this digital realm, urging participants to exercise the same level of vigilance as they do when navigating the internet.

Metaverse: A New Frontier for Criminal Activities
Mr. Ip highlighted that cybercrimes commonly witnessed in cyberspace, such as investment fraud, unauthorized access, theft, and sexual offenses, can also manifest within the metaverse. The decentralized nature of virtual assets in Web3 poses an increased risk of cybercriminals targeting end-point devices, virtual asset wallets, and smart contracts, potentially resulting in asset theft.

Empowering the Younger Generation
The educational initiatives of CyberDefender primarily focus on empowering the younger generation with vital knowledge. The Hong Kong Police Force intends to organize public education programs through the “CyberDefender Metaverse” platform, with the aim of educating teenagers about the latest developments in information technology, potential pitfalls, and the importance of preventing technology-related crimes.

Growing Concerns: Virtual Assets and Cybercrime
During the first quarter of 2023, the Hong Kong Police Force received 663 reports of virtual asset-related incidents, causing a total loss of $570 million. This alarming figure represents a substantial 75% increase compared to the same period in 2022. It underscores the urgency of addressing cyber threats and fostering cybersecurity awareness.

The Vital Role of CyberDefender
As metaverse technology continues to evolve and gain prominence, initiatives like CyberDefender play a crucial role in equipping individuals with the necessary knowledge and awareness to navigate this digital landscape safely. By educating the public about potential risks and promoting cybersecurity practices, the Hong Kong Police Force aims to curtail technology-related crimes and ensure the digital security of its citizens.
